There are tons of places online where artists can post their music, in fact, some would say too many. What are the benefits of having music on so many sites? Look at it like this, you have these retail chains like Macy's, Kmart, Cosco's, Target, etc. Each of the retail chains has a loyal customer base that shops in their store. For whatever reason their customers prefer their store over others. If your product isn't sold at Macy's you lose out on potential customers that only shop at Macy's, if your product isn't in Kmart you lose out on potential customers that only shop at Kmart, if your...well, you get the picture.
If a customer can't find your product where they shop, maybe they'll go searching for a store that carries your product, at the same time, maybe they won't. If you have an established, committed, and loyal fanbase maybe you can afford to take that chance, if you're trying to develop one it may not be the best option for you.
With so many online profiles how do you manage it all?
Well, many of these sites are connected and allow you to post across platforms. You have software like Tweetdeck and sites such as Hootsuite that allow users to simultaneously post updates to their Twitter, Myspace, and Facebook accounts. Artist Data is another site that provides users with one central place to manage many of their online profiles. Using Artist Data a user can post a show and simultaneously syndicate it to their blog, Myspace page, Twitter, Facebook, and almost any event listing website you can imagine.
